Saturday, 18 August 2012

Communication is a process of disseminating information, sharing of thoughts, ideas and feelings between people through different methods such as speaking, writing or body languages. Effective communication extends the concept by ensuring that the message is received and understood by someone in the way it was intended and often expressing a reply back to the sender as a form of acknowledgement. On the other hand, ineffective communication is when message is not brought across.

Effective communication is essential in many occasions. We need to communicate effectively to get the information across in the shortest possible time to ensure maximum efficiency. In our daily life when communicating with our parents, at work when communicating with our superiors or assigning work to our subordinates or even in school when communicating with our lecturers and friends. We do not want to have any communication breakdown. Overall efficiency is the key to get things done fast, sharp and appropriately in this fast progressive world. To communicate effectively, not just the sender must encode the information properly, the receiver must decode the message received accurately too.

Other than ensuring efficiency, we acquire effective communication so as prevent any misunderstanding. Communication through any channels often gives rise to misunderstanding. For example, the wrong choice of words may make your comments sound offending unintentionally or certain body actions may arouse some discomfort in others such as pointing of middle finger at different people from different countries. These brought about unnecessary disputes. Social disharmony can be a result of ineffective communication. Therefore, with the accuracy in the messages through effective communication, such misunderstanding can be minimized.
