Why is effective communication important for me?
Tuesday, 21 August 2012

Due to a misreading of the assignment, I missed the key phrase in the directions: the post should reflect why effective communication is important "for me" and not just important in general.

Being a bit muddled ever since I was young, I missed lots of information that was passed down to me. Often only half was downloaded into my head. Perhaps, this would be a hindrance for me in being a communicator. I understand that in this ever progressing world, academic results are not always the key to be successful in securing a job, there are many other factors that employers nowadays are looking out for. One most important factors would be the art of communication and it will reflect most about me during job interviews. In organizations, efficiency is one of the determinants to be ahead of other. There is a saying that goes, “you can have brilliant ideas, but if you can’t get them across, your ideas won’t get you anywhere.” Who would want an employee who cannot communicate properly and is always the culprit of communication breakdown all the time, causing the downfall of their efficiency?

Due to personal interest, teaching somewhat would be my career in the near future. Whether I am a teacher in school in which I am required to communicate with a large class of students and with the department of teachers during meetings, or whether I am just a tuition teacher who communicates with a small group of students or one to one, for being an educator, effective communication is of utmost importance.
I hope that from this module ES2007S, I will be able to improve myself to be a better communicator, through more active participation in class activities as well as by understanding the gist of being an effective communicator as the course progresses. It will be beneficial for me in pursuing my career next time.

This is a more focused post, Young Sheng, one that captures your specific needs as you view those. Inadvertently, you've also shown that you need to refine your writing. Please see my revisions below:

    1) Due to communication breakdown previous, I missed out the key word in the question in which the post should reflect why effective communication is important for me and not just important in general. >>> Due to a misreading of the assignment, I missed the key phrase in the directions: the post should reflect why effective communication is important "for me" and not just important in general.

    Hi Yong Sheng,

This post feels more personal and sincere than the first one and I liked this one more. I didn't know you want to be a teacher! Yes, a teacher would need to be very learned in professional communication. Teachers, especially teachers of very young students, have the unenviable task of switching between 'adult-to-adult' communication mode and 'adult-to-child' teaching mode. However, I'm confident that you can master that subtlety. By taking this module you will already be taking your first steps to laying down the strong groundwork needed! All the best OK!

With regards to your use of words, I think you meant 'utmost' instead of 'upmost'.

Thanks Han, i suppose being a teacher has always been a backup plan for all students in Science faculty. I will try my best to become an effective communicator at the end of this 12 weeks!

    Hello yongsheng!

Your second post is much more engaging than the first one, so don't worry about being muddle-headed (we all are at times), good job!

Indeed, nowadays most people take notice of how well you communicate more than your academic qualification. I guess, in a way, by communicating, you are also showing how well you are able to present yourself.

Students are getting not so conservative these days, so effective communication skills would definitely be a must-have for a teacher. Hope the next few months will help you move one step nearer towards your potential career! (:

    Hi Yong Sheng,

I guess I am not the only person who is surprised to hear about your future career plan. I have no clue about what type of employment a graduate from statistics usually looks forward to, but I still mistakenly think that it will involve tons of excel file.

I would agree with you, han and yun that communication is very important in professional life. Academic qualification is very important, but merely as a ticket to enter some professions.Interpersonal communication is also crucial in professional world especially considering that office politics more often than not will reach the ear of the employers. Thus, getting along well with others through effective communication skills is an essential skill to possess both in personal and professional level.

Speaking as a student myself, I would agree that students will respect those teachers who are able to communicate with them. Some of my professors are undoubtedly brilliant fellows with many awards on their belt, but some find it difficult to communicate well with students. I hope all of us in group 7 will be able to improve our communication skills together.

    Thanks Hui Yun,

I totally agree with what you said about effective communication being more important than academic qualification. The way a person present himself also shows the level of EQ and IQ a person has or how "street smart" a person is. Yes, there are many kinds of students out there, i believe there should be different approaches to different kinds of student. Thanks, let us learn from one another and improve along the way! :)

    Thanks Eric,

A graduate from Statistics have a few path to choose. Being teacher is only one of them. Apart from that, the norm will choose to become a statistician in banking and finance sector or healthcare sector. Nevertheless, you are right that a statistician usually deal with tons of excel files and also the use or a few programs like R or SPSS. I agree with you, han and yun that interpersonal communication is crucial in the professional world other than just academic results. I shall train hard to become an effective communicator with the help of Brad and you guys from group7! :)
